This pencil ($38) was designed by Gerhard Woerther and his daughter, Bettina, in 2005. Woerther’s training as a mechanical engineer gives his small company freedom of innovation and a technical edge. By building, calibrating and repairing his own machines, Woerther maintains a high level of quality, while allowing him to experiment with designs and materials. Woerther was among the first companies to use aluminum, helping herald the material as a standard for writing instruments.
